UNAM Ratifies 2026 Budget

The UNAM University Council ratified the 2026 budget of 59,878 million pesos. The majority, 89.8%, will come from federal subsidies, with 10.2% from the university's own income. The budget focuses on strengthening education, research, and institutional management.


In a session that was decisive, the full session of the University Council of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) ratified the budget that will govern the institution's operations during the year 2026. The total amount of approved expenditure amounts to 59,878 million pesos, consolidating a financing model where 89.8 percent (53,749 million) comes from federal subsidies, while the remaining 10.2 percent (6,129 million) will be captured through projected own income by the university. The core of the financial strategy is focused on Teaching, which will receive 36,903 million pesos, representing 61.6 percent of total expenditure. This item is strategically divided to cover the demands of the different academic levels: Higher Education: 28,953 million pesos have been allocated (48.4 percent of the global budget). High School: It will receive an allocation of 7,950 million pesos (13.2 percent of the total). This distribution underscores the institutional priority of maintaining coverage and academic quality in the formative cycles critical to national development. For the promotion of scientific knowledge, Research has been allocated 15,708 million pesos, equivalent to 26.3 percent of the budget. The full University Council ratifies an expenditure oriented towards strengthening public education, where federal contributions constitute almost 90 percent of the institutional financial structure. The services integrated by the National Seismological, National Mareographic, and National Astronomical will experience a budget increase of 3.4 percent, going from an allocation of 530 million in the previous year to 548 million pesos for 2026. Similarly, the Program to Support Projects to Innovate and Improve Education (PAPIME) will have 73 million pesos, reflecting a growth of 4.3 percent. The updating of academic staff is also favored with an increase of 5.9 percent in the Program for Teacher Training and Development (PASD).
